How to Block Someone on Gmail
Blocking sends that sender's future mail to Spam. For newsletters and bulk mail it is usually the wrong tool — here is how to tell.
Try it with your GmailGmail's way: block, filter or unsubscribe
- 1Block: open a message from the sender, click More (the three dots next to Reply), and choose Block [sender]. Everything they send after that goes to Spam.
- 2Unblock: Settings → See all settings → Filters and Blocked Addresses lists every address you have blocked, with an unblock link beside each. You can also use Unblock in the same More menu on one of their messages.
- 3Filter instead when you want the mail kept but out of sight: More → Filter messages like these, then tick Skip the Inbox (Archive it) and apply a label. Filters can also delete matching mail outright.
- 4Unsubscribe for newsletters and promotions. Google's own advice is to unsubscribe rather than block a legitimate bulk sender — blocking leaves them sending, it just files it in Spam.
- 5Report spam for unwanted mail from senders you have no relationship with. That trains Gmail's filtering, which blocking a single address does not.
- 6Blocking is per address. A sender who mails from a new address gets straight through, so blocking one cold emailer rarely ends the problem.
The problem
- ✕Blocking is one address at a time, and senders rotate addresses
- ✕Blocked mail lands in Spam rather than disappearing, so it is still there
- ✕A filter has to be written and maintained per sender or keyword
- ✕None of it distinguishes a supplier you must read from a newsletter you must not
What Clarity does — and does not do
- 1Clarity does not block anyone. Blocking, spam reporting and unsubscribing stay Gmail's job and yours.
- 2What it does is read every incoming email and apply a Gmail label saying what it is — needs a reply, awaiting reply, marketing, informational.
- 3Marketing and newsletters are labelled as such, so the mail you must act on is separable from the mail you tolerate.
- 4The morning brief covers only what needs you. Labelled marketing is left out of it.
What changes
- ✓Works on senders you have never seen before, with no address list to maintain
- ✓Judges what the message is, so a supplier and a newsletter using the same words are treated differently
- ✓Native Gmail labels — visible on web and mobile, and you can still search or filter on them
- ✓Your blocked list, filters and spam settings are untouched
Who runs into this
Business owner
Blocked a cold emailer, then got the same pitch from a new address the next week.
Operations manager
Wants supplier notifications kept but out of the inbox — a filter, not a block.
Consultant
Signed up to forty newsletters over three years and reads none of them.
Frequently asked questions
What happens when you block someone on Gmail?
Their future messages go to your Spam folder instead of the inbox. Nothing is deleted, they are not told, and mail they sent before the block stays where it is.
Does the person know they have been blocked?
No. Gmail sends no notification, and their message still leaves their outbox normally. The filtering happens on your side.
How do I see who I have blocked?
Settings → See all settings → Filters and Blocked Addresses. The blocked list is at the bottom of that tab, with an unblock link on each entry.
Should I block a newsletter or unsubscribe?
Unsubscribe. Blocking keeps them sending and just routes it to Spam; unsubscribing stops the mail being sent at all. Google recommends unsubscribing for promotional senders you do not want to block outright.
Can Clarity block cold email for me?
No. Clarity does not block senders and does not unsubscribe on your behalf. It labels incoming mail by what it is, so marketing is separated from the mail that needs an answer — blocking stays in Gmail's hands.
