How to Unsend an Email in Gmail

Gmail's way: the Undo Send window

1. 1Straight after sending, an Undo link appears at the bottom left. Clicking it returns the message to a draft — it was never delivered.
2. 2Lengthen the window before you need it: Settings (the gear icon) → See all settings → General → Undo Send, and choose 30 seconds instead of the 5-second default. Click Save Changes at the bottom, or it will not stick.
3. 3The window is a genuine hold: Gmail delays the send for that many seconds, which is why longer is strictly better.
4. 4The same Undo link appears in the Gmail app on Android and iOS, and uses the same setting.
5. 5Once the countdown ends, that is it. Gmail has no equivalent of Outlook's recall — no way to pull back a delivered message, inside or outside your organisation.
6. 6For a longer safety margin, use Schedule send instead of Send. A scheduled message sits in the Scheduled label and Cancel send turns it back into a draft at any point before it goes.

The problem

• ✕The default is 5 seconds, which is shorter than it takes to spot a wrong attachment
• ✕There is no recall after the window, at all
• ✕The setting has to be changed before the mistake, not after
• ✕Nothing catches the mistakes that need catching — wrong recipient, wrong price, wrong tone
